Close Up: Michael Fowler from Picturehouse at FACT

Liverpool is one of the most exciting cities in the UK. To find out more about the city and its relationship to film we spoke to Michael Fowler from Picturehouse at FACT.

Your job title is Marketing Manager what does this mean on a daily basis?

Marketing Manager - I organise events, run social media channels and make things to get people to visit our cinema.

Picturehouse at FACT is based in Liverpool – what do you offer your audience that they can’t get anywhere else?

We work alongside an art gallery called FACT, which is a pretty special combination that allows us to program interesting films that coincide with their exhibitions. We also have the ability to play both 35mm and 70mm films which is a rare thing as many cinemas work only in digital now.

How much of the programming of events and the film programme is influenced by the city – its history and culture as well as the various communities that make up Liverpool?

A great deal, we're very proud to have a strong working relationship with Liverpool Pride who run an amazing LGBTQ film program. Liverpool's music scene provides us with a wealth of film and documentary. There's also a really strong community of film nerds, including our friends Geeks Who Don't Want to Grow Up, who love putting on classic films from the 1980s.

Why is this kind of offering important?

It creates a community in the cinema that you wouldn't find in a multiplex and I think our visitors and regulars have a sense of pride about the place.

What aspect of your job do you enjoy the most?

Meeting people and running events around film.

What has been the most challenging project you have worked during your time at FACT?

Fresher’s fairs are pretty unrelenting. Once a year we go out to give students free stuff, the days are long and very tiring.

What sort of qualities and qualifications would you look for in someone looking to work in this area?

I'd look for someone who is already doing their own film events and can prove they've made them a success.
